small business idea, but do not know what I get started?

I am a full time student in college, and I can not find a job, so I had the idea of starting a small business so that I can do at home and in my spare time. I'm so creative, I had the idea to create greeting cards for people I know in a lower rate than the cards can be purchased at Hallmark or elsewhere. I know what I have to advertise and reach potential customers the problem is I do I'm not sure what do legally. As I have an income, I have to pay taxes right? Do I need a permit for small businesses?? I'm really not sure what type of license you need to get and where. Any help is greatly appreciated! I'm at a total loss! Thanks in advance!

You may need a business license and a license to sales tax in your state (if sales tax). In some states, are the same document and in other states, are separated. Can operate as a sole proprietor, all you have to do is fill a DBA (doing business as) if you want to use a name for your business. This is done usually at the county level. Incorporating your business is a good idea. For this type of business, an LLC probably be your best option. The paperwork is easier that most of Mission College in consultation with the Secretary of State for State and place of your documents folder if you decide to create an LLC. Your taxes are recorded as income self-employment in his normal return (no need to file a tax return as a company other than a single member LLC or sole proprietor.) His university resources can have contractors (ask the department of business), which can also be useful.
